Albulm covers
We also created a Tour poster to promote, through images and tour dates that we added onto the poster.
music video
We also included many shots of the main artist throughout the music video to show the importance of the main character, we also had the main artist lip syncing the words this is to create realism and a connection between both artist and the audience.
As our music video is to not just promote the music but also promote the artist we didnt want to take the importance and focus away from the male artist, therefore we included an array of close ups and medium close ups, and long shots of the male artist to aware the audience of the importance of the male main artist. We also kept the other aspects of the dark colours from both male and female to connote mystery creating engima to the audience.
We created a story board and when it was time to gather our artists we found that the plan didnt work as well as we thought it could and therefore we decided for a better, professional looking music video to change our narrative and characters. We kept most of the ideas and components of our planned music video from the outfits the male artist and two locations being a house and a park. However we changed the many girl characters to just one but kept the idea of having the female character as the dominant one to challenge the dominant ideology.

physocographic questionnaire and Summary of findings
The r&b genre in general has the same form, the majority of videos we analysed were songs based on relationships, break-ups, money and love.
2) How is youth gender and ethnicity represented?
Youth is normally presented as stereotypes in music videos, this could be done to perhaps reinforce the realism and help the viewers connect with the character and their story in the song. I personally think that music videos don not challenge the conventions of dominant gender, as in most of our groups music videos the males have been stereotypically dominant of females. The characters they play are also stereotypical to patriarchy and roles of men and women, the females are glamorous, dressed up etc. The men have cars in their videos, girls etc.
3) How do they appeal to the target audience?
In the music videos we have analysed for research we have found that an average target demographic of 10-50 is suitable. The characters and stories told within the music videos are easy to relate to for example Beyoncé-Irreplacable about a cheating man. This allows a lot of women and also men to relate to the characters.
The costumes in all the videos are very glamorous and cool, they appeal to the target audience as this is what they would like to look like themselves.
Also the pros used in the videos such as expensive cars, money, diamond rings, big party’s…these all appeal to the target demographic and they look up to and admire the artists.
4) How are technical codes used generically?
5) What narrative theory can you apply?
The R&B and soul videos we have studied have demonstrated narrative theories, such as Levi Strauss’ binary opposites. In some cases the narrative tension is based on opposition or conflict, this is usually with the male and female characters. These narrative theories are perhaps used to portray realism or connect with the dominant genre. Furthermore, some of the R&B/soul videos we studied had a subtle element of Todrov’s theory, which is the simplest form of narrative. The basic structure starts with equilibrium, a calm period…then agents of disruption cause disequilibrium, a period of unsettlement and disquiet. This is then followed by a renewed state of peace and harmony for the protagonists and a new equilibrium brings the chaos to an end. However, in some of the videos, all of the elements of the narrative theory, are not all shown, for example, in the Beyonce video- Irreplaceable, the video starts with the disruption and then follows on with showing the reconciliation of equilibrium. However, it is obvious that there was equilibrium, previously in the relationship, by the storyline portrayed.
6) How might audiences make use of the videos?
Music videos not only allow audiences to enjoy their preferred music or songs, it also allows them to connect with the artist, follow and enjoy the message they are attempting to portray. This could also allow the audience a sense of either escapism, allowing them to get lost in the world of the video or a sense of realism, determined on their personal situations…. Which perhaps makes it most enjoyable.
7) How do the CD covers make good use of the enigma code of narrative?
CD covers give the audience an insight into the narrative of the music, therefore creating a strong enigma. The CD covers perhaps represents the genre of the music and also the character and perhaps the personality of the artist, depending on the image presented to the audience. A CD cover can portray to a demographic a chosen message of narrative.
8) How is the font/colour etc used generically?
In R&B/Soul CD covers, we found that the fonts are generally bold and striking, allowing them to catch the audiences eye and also the colours are generally normal and realistic, to portray realism to the audience, as it expresses real life situations and people, which helps the artist to connect to the audience efficiently.
9)How is youth gender /ethnicity represented on the CD covers?
The use of the codes and conventions that are represented on the album covers convey the particular gender and ethnicity. They are highlighted from the colours, images and dominant genders used on the album cover. The gesture and the position of the artist or the model used on the album cover represents the way the artists or want the CD cover to be viewed and
10) How do they appeal to the target audience?
They appeal to the target audiences by the use of generic codes used on the album covers. The mise en scene, camera shots and costumes relate to specific target audiences making it visible who the target audience is. The audience would be able to relate to the chosen CD covers allowing them to become interested and eager to buy the album.
11)How might audiences make use of the CD covers?
Audiences make use of the CD covers as it allows them to have knowledge on what genre and style of music they album conveys, and whether the particular music suits them. The CD cover allows the audience to recognise and relate to the CD covers from the codes and conventions of the genre the CD cover is conveying.

Further Analysis of the music videos and CD covers
Narrative
I have noticed from a majority of the R&B music videos i analysed that the narratives were very similar where the beginning, middle and end of the videos were all very a like and consisted of an array of relationships and problems.
Justin Timberlake Music Video
This music video started where the male artist meets an attractive female in a nightclub or a party where alchol and dancing are present. The male grabs the femals attention by continously trying to win her over, he achieves this by showing and surrounding her with continuos affection. They then go on to show their relationship has developed this is portrayed by numerous two shots where the couple show their utility and togetherness as a couple. Passion and commitment is then shown through a seen which is highlighted either with friends or in a bedroom. The male artist is then honoured as being the saviour as the female is rescured by the male artist from drawning in a swimming pool.
The relationship then takes a dramatic turn which is implied from that of the facial expressions and body language of the artist and model. In this particular video the problem is indicated from a fight with another male, this is brought about by the female character (the girlfriend) being dishonest to the male artist.
The ending of the video includes the upset girlfriend driving away from the problem however misjudging her driving and crashes. Within this video it consists of both Todorovs and Props narrative theorys.
Fergie Music Video
This music video is introduced by the female artist and friends enwinding at a party, where again dancing and alchol are present. The artist then remenises to times before she was rich and famous giving the audience an insight of what her life was like in the past compared to now. Included within these scenes are luxury items including a swimming pool, expensive cars, private jets and numerous outfits.
The next scene then goes on to the artist experiencing problems as she speaks on the phone this again creates realism and allows the audience to connect with the artist.
The Pussycat dolls Music Video
This music video starts with one of the band members in a bathroom scene, it then goes on to the single band member reuniting with the rest of the band this is established by her opening a door where the rest of the band are introduced. They are then on a dance floor where dancing and alchol are present.
The lyrics consist of an ending relationship this challenges dominant ideology as in the music video the female band reveal importance and strength within a relationship.
Chris Brown Music Video
In the beginning of this music video the male artist meets an attractive female at nightclub where again alchol and dancing are present. To gain her full attention he surrounds her with affection by showing to her that he is interested. The passion and utility between the couple is then shown through multiple two shots which indicate their feelings towards each other. He then shows her more affection by surrounding her in passion.
The male artist is then honoured by being the hero by saving the female from falling labelling her the victim. This relates to Propps narative theory.
Beyonce Music Video
This music video highlights relationships and problems. This is shown by the beginning of the video where the female artist is in control and is breaking up a relationship with her boyfriend. This again challenges dominant ideology and patriarchys theory where males dominant females.
In the middle scenes of the video it associates with moving on from a relationship which allows audiences to connect and relate with the artist and music video.
The ending of the video shows the female artist being in control and creating a new equilibrium by having a new love interest. This video links to Todorovs narrative theory.
The representation portayed by the music video indicates that women are presented as strong, powerful individuals this is suggested by the camera shots and mise en scene with in the video.
Stock characters
The stock characters used convey a typical celebrity look this is shown from the physic, costumes and appearence of the characters, whether they are male or female they portray a sense of professionalism which helps refelct realism from the music videos and CD Covers. By the stock characters having these advantages of a perfect physic and appearance it helps attract audiences from both genders whether its men who are attracted to the characters or women who view them as role models, this helps widen the target audience and sales. The majority of the CD covers and music videos i analysed centralised female characters wearing revealing clothing which entice the audience. By using female characters in the music and CD covers it reinforces the dominant ideology where men view women as 'objects' from their exquisiteness from this it underlines the majority of the target audience.
Stock Settings
The stock settings throughout the music videos consisted of multiple themes including, nightclubs, parties, garden parties, within the homes of the stock characters. This help set the scene for the narrative for the audiences to understand and relate to.
Representation/Audience
The main stock settings night clubs or parties, help set the diegsis of the music video this creates a sense of realism and connection between the audience and the stock characters helping generate realism. From viewing the music videos it is obvious to state the age of the demographic audience this is shown through the settings and stock characters as they relflect what the music video is representing therefore influencing the audience. From the music videos steroetypes are reinforced through the way the video is constructed. Teenagers and young adults are targeted through the steroetypes. Alchol, parting and dancing are all included in the 5 music videos i analysed which outline the typic stereotypes of both teenagers and young adults.
For the CD cover young attractive females are on average used this creates a representation of young women and females are being 'eye candy or an object' for males.
Narrative Theory
The lyrics of the songs it points out and highlights Todorov’s theory which includes: an equilibrium, disequilibrium, realisation of the equilibrium, attempt to repair the equilibrium and the new equilibrium. This is shown through the narrative of the music videos which helps the audience to understand and follow the diegesis set within the music video.
Editing/lighting
The editing of the numerous music videos that i analysed use fast, quick paced editing which highlights the key codes and conventions of R&B genre as it creates a nightclub feel as if the fast pacing matched the quick pace of the disco lights which creates a happy energised atmoshphere.

Research of music video-Justin Timberlake
Mise en scene
close-ups
Two shots
Over shoulder shots
Extreme close ups
Tracking shots
Are used this creates different angles and positions that the audience can view the artist in creating an overall expression of the artist, helping the audience relate the to artist. The use of close-ups and medium close-ups suggest the important and dominance of the artist.
The tracking shots of the artist allow the audience to experience as if they were following the artist creating realism and a connection between the audience and the artist.
Two shots are also used when the male and female character interact this shows the relationship and the use of togetherness between the couple, portraying to the audience the feelings and emotions between them. By using two shots it also allows the viewers to see the two characters together creating an overall opinion on the couple together, this also shows that when the two characters are together they are both equally important as they share the frame so that one of them is not dominating the frame showing equality in their relationship.
The two shots also allow the audience to see both characters faces whilst talking revealing their emotions through their facial expressions, creating a theme and mood that the audience can relate to and understand.
The use of tracking shots when the artist and female are traveling in their cars also creates realism as cars are very common in everyday life therefore setting a scene. Also by the use of tracking shots it creates an experience as if the audience is in the scene with them creating a connection between them.
The first scene of the music video includes two black siloettes of the two main characters this is portrayed by the close up of the two characters creating importance, the two characters are surrounded and drowned by shelter of dark lighting this creates mystery as it hides their identities creating enigma.
The next couple of scenes include a blonde women who was quickly shown in the first scene appling make-up this connotes feminity targeting female audiences, also by her appearing in the frame on her own it suggests importance. After another scene is shown including a car tire and alloy this connotes mascilinity as cars are targeted mainly at men, therefore this shows that the music video is targeted for both male and female viewers.
The next scene shows a male figure with a micro phone this suggests that he is the artist, he is wearing a formal outfit which connotes importance and professionalism, he is also wearing a hat which covers half his face this creates mystery and enigma as the hat covers the artists identity and emotions. When the artist starts to sing he takes off his hat this then goes on to reveal his identity which he can also express through his song and lyrics helping the audience relate to him. Whislt the artist is singing into the microphone a low angle shot is used this creates a feel as if the artist has more dominance over the frame and the audience as he is higher up and therefore leaves the audiences looking up at him.
Another scene includes Justin Timberlake being affectionate with the attractive blonde women, this portrays passion and the relationship between the two characters, this also helps the audience relate to the video.
Once again linking back to the key codes and conventions of the R&B genre alchol and dancing are also present in the video which i noticed in all of the videos i analysed, also a swimming pool is also shown which i noticed from Fergies music video by including these luxury items it connotes wealth and happiness.
The swimming pool goes on to reveal the blonde women drawning and then the male artist being the saviour and saving her this links to props theor where the hero is the male and the victim is the female who needs saving.
The male artists costume consists of dark colours which connote mystery and mascilinity, whereas the female model is wearing light colours which connote innocence and feminity which again targets both genders.
In the majority of the video the artist is standing on a high leveled stage which connotes importance and arthority as he is positioned higher then everyone eles. Behind the artist when he is performing on the stage in the music video are stairs which reveal a red carpet this connotes fame and importance again allowing the audience to be aware that he is the main character.
There is a bedroom scene where the two characters are on the bed this connotes seduction which is also a main code and convention in R&B genre. There is also a scene where the female character is racing in her car this is shown from the point of view shot from the female looking out ahead on the road when she is driving this allows the audience to experience as if they were in the car themselves or even driving this creates realism and a connection with the character. The slow pace of when the women crashes the car allows the audience to take in the accident and understand the diegesis, also it allows the audience to view the characters facial expressions and body language revealing her emotions and feeling creating enigma.
The movement and gesture through out the video is confident portraying power and importance, when the artist is in a nightclub which also links back to the main key codes and conventions if the R&B genre, dancing and a fun feel to the scene is revealed allowing the audience to relate to the video.
The artist whislt performing in the video points and looks into the camera this portrays a feeling as if he is directly speaking to the audience creating a connection between them.
Editing
The editing throughout the video shows the degises by dialogue this allows the viewers to understand the music video.
Slow motion also highlights the importance and allows the viewers to take in the storyline, by the rest of the music video being in a normal pace, this suggest that the scene edited in slow motion is important and therefore helps the narrative make sense and flow.
Also included in the video to help convey and create realism is a fighting scene where the male artist (Justin Timberlake) has a fight with another male character this reveals his emotions and feelings and helps sets the mood for the audience. Dialogue is added within the video this helps create realism and prevents the audience form loosing interest as it is unique and it is not included in a majority of R&B genre music videos. Also by using the dialogue it helps the audience relate to the video as it creates a narrative which helps the audience to understand.
Research music video: Fergie Glamorous
Mise en scene
The music video starts with people entering a gate in to a garden party, the scene is in a white and black effect, however some things within the scene are highlighted in color such as the artists hair and top, cups that all the people dancing at the party are holding and the swimming pool this suggests that the importance of the items which are shown by the color this highlights the effect that the color has for example Fergie has her blonde hair highlighted in color whereas other characters remain in black and white this suggests that she is the main character as she dominants the screen, this is also shown as she is at the front and the group of people are behind her suggesting that she hold the power and importance compared to the others. Also as the cups are shown in colour and therefore helps them stand out it links back to the key codes and conventions as the R&B genre conveys a party atmosphere which suggests the that the R&B music is popular at nightclubs and parties where there would be alchol and dancing. Dance routines are performed by some dancers within the opening of the video which links back to the key conventions of R&M/Soul genre. The party scene then tilts upwards to reveal a plan flying past suggesting that the plane has some significance and importance to the music video.
The next scene then shows Fergie in a plane drinking champyne again featuring luxury items that I have noticed occur in a majority of the music videos I analysed this connotes wealthiness resulting in power and confidence. Other luxury items such as diamonds, expensive cars and private planes are used allowing the audience to experience and see what it is like to be rich and famous. The body language and gesture of the artist suggests she is confident. As she looks at the camera it creates a fell for the audience as if she is directly speaking to them. Different locations and various costumes are also used such as in a garden party, on a plane and shopping this highlights that rich and famous people also do things that less wealthier people do, allowing the viewers to connect with the characters.
The next scene is then a bird’s eye view of the city allowing the audience to experience from what the character is seeing from her position which is on a plane, this creates realism. There is a continuous array of two shots and medium close ups used this reveals the artists facial expression and creates a sense of being close up and personal with the artist, this creates a connection between the artist and audience.
The next scene then shows Fergie acting in a movie and then shows her after starring in a scene of the film created in use for the music video this gives the audience an experience of how movie stars live and what happens on a filming set this allows the audience to experience 'being in the celebrity`s shoes' this helps the audience relate to the artist by seeing how they live their live.
Editing
Black and white effects are used during the opening of the music video highlighting the alcohol the main characters and other items such as swimming pool in colour, this suggests that because there shown in a different effect to the rest of what is in the frame it portrays importance as the coloured objects stand out over the rest of the scene, therefore the audience reconise the objects more then the black and white effect creating enigma.
Non Linear editing is used to show the audience past events suggesting her emotions towards those times, by having flash backs it also helps the audience experience an insight of the artists life revealing her personality creating a connection and helping the audience relate to the music video.
Lighting
Natural lighting is used throughout the music video which highlights the characters face revealing their importance and dominance throughout the video.
Costume and Gesture
Different outfits and hair styles are included and shown throughout the video, the outfits compliment her figure and beauty connoting seduction and sexiness this helps the video and artist appeal to the opposite sex, less clothes are worn which show cleavage and bare skin this shows a seductive side to her which appeals to the male viewers. Whilst performing in the video Fergie has a confident walk and her body language shows power and attitude this is also conveyed as she looks in to the camera showing confidence and allows the audience to view characters emotions. I have noticed from a majority of R&B music videos that i have analysed, that the artist continously in parts throughout the video look into the camera this creates realism and an experience as if the audience are being personally spoken to, i have also noticed that the female artists show a lot of bare skin by wearing limited clothing this links back to the key codes and conventions of the R&B genre.

Research albulm cover 5- Rhianna
Rhianna
The use of using a famous celebrity for the front cover suggests that she is the artist as she dominants the cover from the close ups. This suggests that she is important and plays a big role in the album.
By using the artist for the model it allows the audience to recognise the model and therefore become familiar with the genre and style of music on the album, also by using the artist for the front cover of the album it increases the sales as the audience will be familiar with the artist and therefore feel more confident with their purchase. This album cover shows the artist alone this suggests the convention of the solo album cover. The use of different bright colours connotes a feel good factor a lightening the viewers moods which will encourage them to buy the album.
The bright colours also connote a happy, bright feel which suggests sunny, bright weather which connotes the summer. By using these arrays of colours creating a summer feeling it suggests that due to the hot weather less clothes are warn symbolising more skin shown. This could help attract both genders as summer time and hot weather appeals to both males and females. The bright colours are shown on the artist’s face this helps highlight her face and beauty helping her stand out on the cover, creating importance and dominance.
The artists name is in a bold, large text this suggets that she is trying to put her name out to the audience allowing her to become more reconisable. The name of the album and her name is in a white coloured formal font this connotes purity and innocence. As the name of the album is called Rehab this automatically suggets problems and addictions, thereofre by putting the font in white and by having it smaller then the artists name it puts across an innocent feel. From the bright colours and sunny background, This could be linked to the stereotypical idea being on holiday consisting of parties, dancing and alchol. The costume of the artist is also very sexy and seductive due to the amount of flesh showing. This is reinforced by the gesture of the model as the image highlights her figure and her body language is very open and therefore quite sexual.
From the name of the albulm Rehab and the bright colours used it could reinforce the dominant ideology of women for being powerful and strong this is because the birght colours connote happiness and wealth therefore from the name of the album it could suggest that women are strong as the album consists of a theme about rehab it could portray that if women do attend rehab that they can get through it and come out stronger and happier connoting that females are strong. The text of the title has spaces between each letter this could suggest freedom and independance this could highlight the dominant ideolgy of women as the artist is a female and the colours and objects on the album cover link to feminity therefore suggests that the target audience is aimed at women.
However from the artist being female it could also attract male audiences this is from the limited costume of the artist, as showing bare skin and some of her shoulder it connotes seduction and makes the album cover and artist convey a sexy appeal, which targets male audiences as from patriarchy it suggests that women are just an object for men to look at, therefore by having the artist in just a strap top and from her short her it allows her bare skin to be more visable. The pink lipstick that the artist is wearing connotes romance, passion and love this again links back to targeting male viewers.
As the artist is not looking directly into the camera but away from the camera in a distance on the right hand side of the cover it creates enigma as is suggests "What is she looking at?", it also suggests that she has things on her mind and from not looking into the camera it is hard to see her true emotions from her face directly.
Research albulm cover 4- Massive R&B
Massive R&BThe albulm cover uses an attractive young female artist. A medium shot of the female artist is used which allows the audience to view the model creating an overall opinion on the model. This again links back to targeting male audiences as by using an attractive female model it creats a sexy appeal therefore attracting male audiences, however by using a femal model this creats a feminine feel therefore allows female audiences to relate and connect with the album also attracting them.
They key codes and conventions of the R&B/Soul genre are met and highlighted. These include the white limasine in the background as it connotes glamour and fame, also behind the limosine is a setting og a city and palm trees this suggests a summer feel suggesting hot weather, this connotes happiness and freedom. The background also shows bright colourful lights this creates a party sensation which highlights the key codes and conventions of the genre as from the research i have completed i have noticed that the genre is used mainly at parties and in nightclubs. This suggests a fun factor if dancing and having a good time.
The colours used include purple, gold, pink, white and blue. By using an array of different colours it sends out different feelings to the audiences widening the target audience helping them fit to the specific mood and feel. The colour pink connotes passion, romance and love therefore targeting male audiences as the model is a female. The colour purple connotes wealth and innocence which creates a feel good factor which can help the audience relate and connect to the album. The use of white and gold helps the album cover stand out and therefore attract customers. By using a red carpet and a limosine it connotes wealth and fame therefore this allows the audience to experience as if they were also famous this creates a feel good factor. The use of limited clothes suggest hot weather and sun this is highlighted by the advertising of 'spring 2009' this suggests the summer feeling which therefore appeals to both genres. Also by using less clothing, palm trees and the holiday feeling it also links back to parties, night clubs and alchol which are the key codes and conventions of R&B genres.
The majority of the albulm cover is presented in a purple colour this connotes wealth and creates a feminine feel targeting the female genre, as form the use of palm trees and bright lights it conveys young women getting ready to go out and have a good time. The use of limited clothing not only connotes hot weather and having fun, but also connotes seduction and reveals a sexy appeal which targets the male audience, this allows both genres to connect and relate to the album increasing sales and reconision of the album.
In the top left hand corner there is a box which highlights some artists names, therefore from the name of the artist including:
Rhianna
Tinchy Stryder
Lady Gaga
N Dubz
it reveals the genre of the album as the names included on the front of the cover are R&B artists which allows the audience to connect with the artists and get an insight of what songs are included in the album.
Research albulm cover 3- Neyo
Neyo
The artist is used for the model of this albulm cover, by using the famous artist it allows the audience to recongins the artist and become familiar with the type and style of music included within the albulm.
The colours used consist of black and white. By using these to binary oppiste colours it allows the audience to see two sides of the artist and his personality. This allows a wide audience to become interested and relate to the artist.
The colour white connotes innocence and purity whereas the colour black connotes mystery and style. This alows the audience to create an opinion and personal personality for the artist.
The artist is in the center of frame this suggests that he is dominant and important within the albulm.
The costume he is wearing is a suit this suggests that he is important and stylish giving off an important and professional feel.
He is also wearing a hat which he covers half his face and eyes with this suggests that he is alomost hiding identity creating a mysterious feel. By him covering his eyes it also suggests that his emotions and feelings are hiden also creating mystery, this creates engima for the audience as it suggests that he is hidding for a reason but is not clear why. Also the door on the right hand side of the frame behind the artist suggests that he has came out of one door therefore became more important and successful highlighting the male dominance, however as there is another door infront of him on the left hand side it suggests that as he has came out of one door he has another door to go through, this is highlighted from his hat hiding his face as it suggests that he is still hiden behind a door and his hat therefore is waiting to reveal his true personality which links back to the title of the album suggesting that this is the year where he will shine and become more successful.
The background is white this also connotes innocence, by having a white background it helps the artist to stand out highlighting his importance.
By the name of the albulm "Year of the gentleman" it portrays a male dominance with links to patriarchy, this suggests that males are the more dominant gender therefore targeting male audiences.
However from his costume and body language as it is formal and professional it could also be aimed at the female gender as females are the weaker gender therefore look for stronger, professional males.
The lightening used is natural and bright this creates a happy mood therefore relating back to the party feel of the R&B genre from going out and having a good time, this is suggested from the artists costume as it is formal and creates a going out look which links back to going out to nightclubs. The lightening connotes innocence which gives a feel good factor to the cover.
From the colours used it creates a professional look to the album as the colours consist of black and white this creates a wealthy feel as the album cover conveys perfection and arthority from the posture and costume of the artist allowing the audience to experience without actually being wealthy or famous.
Research albulm cover 2- R&B Collection
The female figure is wearing clothes that compliment her figure and beauty this attracts the opposite gender as it connotes seduction. The purple top she is wearing shows cleavage and skin this also helps create a sex appeal making her seem more confident, this can occur to both male and females genders as it could give women the feel good factor showing them that showing cleavage and skin can make them feel and look that good and confident. Also this can be aimed at the male gender as women are ‘eye candy’ to men therefore the sexier she looks the more male audience she will attract. As I have analysed and researched the key codes and conventions of R&B I have noticed that the scene for this particular genre is at nightclubs and parties, this suggests dancing and having a good time, therefore by feeling confident and sexy it can ensure that people have a good night out making them happy.
By the use of props, costumes and colour on the album cover it suggest the genre of the music as they all relate to the key codes and conventions of the R&B genre. As the female figure is shown in a medium close ups it suggests that she dominates the album cover and is representing a key aspect of the particular genre. This is due to her body language and gesture.
Luxury items are once again used on this album cover, including a swimming pool and a mobile phone which the female model is holding this connotes wealth allowing the audience to either connect with the cover or have an experience of being wealthy without actually having loads of money themselves.
A palm tree and the swimming pool both connote the summer which links back to other album covers i analysed this connotes hot weather portraying a happy, free experience. This also connotes being on holiday which also links back to the key codes and conventions of R&B genres as they are comman at nightclubs and nights out which include dancing, having a good time and alchol this sets the scene for the genre and helps the audience relate to the music.
As well as the first R&B album i analysed a box is shown in the botton left hand corner including the names of the artists within the cd, these names consist of
Tinchy Stryder
Akon

these artists are R&B artists therefore it allows the audience to understand and have knowledge on what R&B genre music is like, by the famous artists listed on the front who are reconisable it allows the audience to relate to the artists.
The colours used including blue, pink and green they connote happiness, passion and summer time which creates a bright, enthusastic feel allowing the audience to experience these emotions.

The name of the artist and the name of the album are both in a silver coloured font this connotes modern and stylish, it also connotes a positive atribute which allows the audience to feel a positive sentiment asembeling them to connect with the artist and album cover.
Research music video- Pussycat Dolls Hush Hush
Mise en scene
During the opening of the Pussy cat dolls music video, there is a long shot of one of the members of the band in a bath, this advocates as she is alone and is the first member to be introduced first that she is the dominant one and therefore is more important then the other band members. As she is introduced as lying in a bath it connotes seduction and creates a sex appeal to the audience widening the target audience to males as well as females as The Pussy cat dolls are a female band therefore they relate to the women. Close ups and medium close ups are used to portray the artists facial expressions and emotions to the audience, allowing them to personally identify her personality.
The key lighting within the first few seconds when Nichole is in the bath is artificial this helps highlight her face showing her importance. The lighting is also dim and the surroundings of the scene is dark this connotes mystery.
Also by choosing a bath scene it creates realism as most people have a bath and therefore it creates a connection between the artist and audience as it helps them relate to the video. There is a forward tracking shot of the artist as she walks slowly out of the bath and follows the camera this creates a feel to the audience as if they are in the same scene as the artist. As she walks slowly towards the camera the artists movement and gesture is confident this suggests professionalism and power creating a personality of the artists to the audience.
Editing
When the artist trails slowly out of the bath she walks towards a door with a happy bright smile this connotes happiness and enigma for what is behind the door. A jump shot is then added connecting the next scene with the previous scene. The other band members appear suggesting she was happy to be reunited with the band again this suggests that the togetherness of the band and the relationship between them is strong. The members of group appear in different positions making them stand out to the audience showing that they are all equally important when they are all together but in different ways as none of them are positioned together but in different angles suggesting they are all unique but work well together as in the next scene they all perform a dance routine that corresponds with the previous scene and the music. During the music video the other band member appear to have to same amount of screen them as each other this suggests that they are all equally important, however Nichole has more screen time and dominants the frame more, this suggests that she is the more dominant and powerful one out the band as she makes a large impact on her own as well as with the other band members. The editing of the video consists of fast paced editing and slow paced editing which complements the rhythm of the song this seems to be a key convention of the R&M/Soul genre as I have noticed in numerous music videos that I have analysed. . The jump cuts tend to go from a location or setting back to the artist or visa versa this connects the music video with the song and artist. The pace is created by a number of jump cuts which link to the next and previous scenes.
During the music video different locations and costumes are used. The costumes resemble what females would wear to a party theses include dark colors and sparkly accessories connoting mystery and perfection this also reinforces the idea of a party setting connoting fun and mystery.
Also by the artists performing in different costumes it ensure that the audience do not get bored, it also allows them the see the artists in different styles widening the demographic target audience. Limited clothing connotes sexiness and seduction for the opposite sexy making them look and feel confident
Lighting
The lighting of the video is very dark as it is trying to represent a party scene and setting due to the flashing disco lights and dance floor this links back the R&M genre and nightclubs. Throughout the video a combination of both natural and artificial lighting is used to highlight singers’ faces, the artificial lightening also creates a party feel and portrays an R&M genre.

The music video challenges dominant ideology, as it portrays that women are in control and having the power this is highlighted by the body language shown by Beyonce. The close up of a nail file that she uses within the video whilst she is arguing with the male character, highlights her authority, personality and opinion on the matter as if she doesn’t care, showing she’s strong and in control. The iconography of a nail file can also be used to connote femininity . This is also shown as she uses seduction to take off his jacket and chain portraying that she brought them and therefore from the lyrics "if i brought it please dont touch" shes gaining power by demanding for the items she brought back as she has that authority to have him or leave him as he seems keen to the mood change showing that it’s not his decision.
