Narrative
I have noticed from a majority of the R&B music videos i analysed that the narratives were very similar where the beginning, middle and end of the videos were all very a like and consisted of an array of relationships and problems.
Justin Timberlake Music Video
This music video started where the male artist meets an attractive female in a nightclub or a party where alchol and dancing are present. The male grabs the femals attention by continously trying to win her over, he achieves this by showing and surrounding her with continuos affection. They then go on to show their relationship has developed this is portrayed by numerous two shots where the couple show their utility and togetherness as a couple. Passion and commitment is then shown through a seen which is highlighted either with friends or in a bedroom. The male artist is then honoured as being the saviour as the female is rescured by the male artist from drawning in a swimming pool.
The relationship then takes a dramatic turn which is implied from that of the facial expressions and body language of the artist and model. In this particular video the problem is indicated from a fight with another male, this is brought about by the female character (the girlfriend) being dishonest to the male artist.
The ending of the video includes the upset girlfriend driving away from the problem however misjudging her driving and crashes. Within this video it consists of both Todorovs and Props narrative theorys.
Fergie Music Video
This music video is introduced by the female artist and friends enwinding at a party, where again dancing and alchol are present. The artist then remenises to times before she was rich and famous giving the audience an insight of what her life was like in the past compared to now. Included within these scenes are luxury items including a swimming pool, expensive cars, private jets and numerous outfits.
The next scene then goes on to the artist experiencing problems as she speaks on the phone this again creates realism and allows the audience to connect with the artist.
The Pussycat dolls Music Video
This music video starts with one of the band members in a bathroom scene, it then goes on to the single band member reuniting with the rest of the band this is established by her opening a door where the rest of the band are introduced. They are then on a dance floor where dancing and alchol are present.
The lyrics consist of an ending relationship this challenges dominant ideology as in the music video the female band reveal importance and strength within a relationship.
Chris Brown Music Video
In the beginning of this music video the male artist meets an attractive female at nightclub where again alchol and dancing are present. To gain her full attention he surrounds her with affection by showing to her that he is interested. The passion and utility between the couple is then shown through multiple two shots which indicate their feelings towards each other. He then shows her more affection by surrounding her in passion.
The male artist is then honoured by being the hero by saving the female from falling labelling her the victim. This relates to Propps narative theory.
Beyonce Music Video
This music video highlights relationships and problems. This is shown by the beginning of the video where the female artist is in control and is breaking up a relationship with her boyfriend. This again challenges dominant ideology and patriarchys theory where males dominant females.
In the middle scenes of the video it associates with moving on from a relationship which allows audiences to connect and relate with the artist and music video.
The ending of the video shows the female artist being in control and creating a new equilibrium by having a new love interest. This video links to Todorovs narrative theory.
The representation portayed by the music video indicates that women are presented as strong, powerful individuals this is suggested by the camera shots and mise en scene with in the video.
Stock characters
The stock characters used convey a typical celebrity look this is shown from the physic, costumes and appearence of the characters, whether they are male or female they portray a sense of professionalism which helps refelct realism from the music videos and CD Covers. By the stock characters having these advantages of a perfect physic and appearance it helps attract audiences from both genders whether its men who are attracted to the characters or women who view them as role models, this helps widen the target audience and sales. The majority of the CD covers and music videos i analysed centralised female characters wearing revealing clothing which entice the audience. By using female characters in the music and CD covers it reinforces the dominant ideology where men view women as 'objects' from their exquisiteness from this it underlines the majority of the target audience.
Stock Settings
The stock settings throughout the music videos consisted of multiple themes including, nightclubs, parties, garden parties, within the homes of the stock characters. This help set the scene for the narrative for the audiences to understand and relate to.
Representation/Audience
The main stock settings night clubs or parties, help set the diegsis of the music video this creates a sense of realism and connection between the audience and the stock characters helping generate realism. From viewing the music videos it is obvious to state the age of the demographic audience this is shown through the settings and stock characters as they relflect what the music video is representing therefore influencing the audience. From the music videos steroetypes are reinforced through the way the video is constructed. Teenagers and young adults are targeted through the steroetypes. Alchol, parting and dancing are all included in the 5 music videos i analysed which outline the typic stereotypes of both teenagers and young adults.
For the CD cover young attractive females are on average used this creates a representation of young women and females are being 'eye candy or an object' for males.
Narrative Theory
The lyrics of the songs it points out and highlights Todorov’s theory which includes: an equilibrium, disequilibrium, realisation of the equilibrium, attempt to repair the equilibrium and the new equilibrium. This is shown through the narrative of the music videos which helps the audience to understand and follow the diegesis set within the music video.
Editing/lighting
The editing of the numerous music videos that i analysed use fast, quick paced editing which highlights the key codes and conventions of R&B genre as it creates a nightclub feel as if the fast pacing matched the quick pace of the disco lights which creates a happy energised atmoshphere.
